When someone in Lajpat Nagar searches for "interior designer near me" or a Dwarka resident types "best chartered accountant Delhi" — Google's local results are what appear first. Before organic website results. Before paid ads, often.
The engine behind those local results is Google Business Profile (GBP) — formerly known as Google My Business. It's free, it's powerful, and a properly optimised profile is one of the highest-ROI marketing activities a Delhi business can invest time in.
This is a complete, step-by-step setup guide — written specifically for Delhi NCR businesses — updated for 2026.
Go to business.google.com and sign in with a Google account that you'll keep long-term (not a personal Gmail you might forget — use your business email or a dedicated admin Gmail).
If your business is already listed (you can check by searching your business name on Google Maps): Click "Claim this business" and follow the verification process.
If you're creating a new listing: Click "Add your business to Google" and enter your business name.
This is the single most important decision in your GBP setup. Google uses your primary category to determine which searches you appear for.
Choose the most specific primary category that accurately describes your main business activity:
You can add up to 9 secondary categories. Use them to cover all your services. For example, a Delhi NCR marketing agency might use:
Important: Don't add a secondary category that represents a service you don't actually offer — this can generate irrelevant reviews and confuse your audience.
If customers visit your physical location (shop, office, clinic, restaurant): Enter your full address — Building name or number, Street, Area, Delhi + PIN code.
For Delhi, be specific: "Basement, 12 Khan Market, New Delhi 110003" not just "Khan Market Delhi"
If you serve customers at their location (plumber, caterer, wedding photographer, digital agency visiting clients): You can hide your exact address and instead set a service area. Add specific localities, districts, or Delhi metro areas where you work.
If both (like a salon that has a location AND offers home services): Enter your address AND set service areas.
Use a local Delhi landline or Indian mobile number that is consistently used across all your digital presence (website, social media, directory listings). Consistency of your phone number across all platforms is a local ranking signal.
For website: enter your main domain (not a social media page or a specific landing page unless you genuinely don't have a website).
Google needs to confirm your business is real and at the location you claim. Verification options:
Postcard verification (most common for new Delhi businesses) Google mails a postcard with a 5-digit code to your business address within 5–14 days. Enter the code in your GBP dashboard to complete verification. Make sure someone is at the address to receive the postcard — if it's returned, you'll need to request another.
Phone or SMS verification Available for some businesses. Google calls or texts your registered number with a verification code.
Video call verification Google may offer a live video verification where you show your business premises and proof of operation.
Instant verification If your website is already verified in Google Search Console with the same domain, GBP may offer instant verification.
Important: Don't touch your address or category while waiting for your postcard — this can reset the verification process.
Once verified, go through every section of your GBP dashboard:
Enter your actual operating hours including different hours for different days. If you're closed on Sundays, mark it. If your Diwali hours differ — use "Special hours" for holiday periods.
Write a description that includes:
Example for a Delhi wedding photographer: "Professional wedding and pre-wedding photographer based in South Delhi, serving couples across Delhi NCR, Noida, Gurgaon, and destination weddings across India. Specialising in candid, documentary-style wedding photography and cinematic videography. Over 200 Delhi weddings photographed since 2018. Serving venues including the Leela, Taj Palace Hotel, Hyatt Regency, banquet halls in Chattarpur and Vasant Kunj."
Use the Services tab to list every individual service. Each service can have a name, category, description, and optional price. This directly affects which searches trigger your listing.
Upload at least 10 high-quality photos across these categories:
Google data shows profiles with 100+ photos get significantly more views than profiles with fewer than 10.
For retail businesses, add your product catalogue directly in GBP. For service businesses, use the Services section.
Why this matters: Product/service listings can appear as panel entries directly in search results, giving your listing more visual real estate.
Enable the "Message" feature so potential customers can contact you directly from your Google listing via chat. Set up an automated welcome message.
In Delhi, WhatsApp is the dominant messaging channel — consider adding your WhatsApp number as the business phone so the click-to-call or click-to-WhatsApp flows naturally.
Your GBP is live — now comes the most important ongoing activity: generating Google reviews.
How to get your review link: In GBP dashboard → Home → "Get more reviews" → Share the link directly.
Systematise the ask:
Respond to every review. Positive ones with genuine thanks. Negative ones with professionalism and a resolution offer — never defensively. How you respond to a negative review is as powerful a trust signal as the review itself.
GBP Posts appear in your listing and in local search results. Types of posts:
Post at least once per week. Posts expire after 7 days (Offers/Events last as long as you set). An active posting cadence signals an active, trustworthy business to both Google and searchers.
Don't add keywords to your business name. "ABC Travels | Best Delhi Tour Operator" violates Google's guidelines. This can result in suspension.
Don't use a PO Box or virtual address if you don't genuinely operate from that location. GBP suspensions for address fraud are common and hard to appeal.
Don't ignore the Q&A section. If you don't add questions and answers yourself, customers will — and some may be misleading or inaccurate.
Don't let negative reviews sit unanswered. One unanswered 1-star review with a genuine complaint can dominate a viewer's perception.
Monthly checklist:
That's roughly 30 minutes per month for one of your most powerful free marketing channels.
